"Three Sieves" - Drei Siebe, 2022
ALREADY SIEVED TODAY? Heute schon gesiebt?
Contribution to an open call by the Friedrich-Schiller-Universität Jena. The philosopher Jakob Friedrich Fries (1773-1843) wrote about his antisemitic ideas, which makes it intolerable to leave the sculpture on the university grounds as it is. The university asked artists to modify the sculpture, and I came up with the idea of the three sieves.
The wisdom of the three sieves is ascribed to Sophokles. Everything you’d like to say about others should pass the triple filter test / the three sieves first. First sieve: Is it true? Second sieve: Is it good? Third sieve: Is it necessary? The three-filter-test is the basis of good communication.
In 1816, Philosopher Fries called the jews „VOLKSVERDERBER“ (spoilers of the people). Therefore, he fails the first sieve already. However, if you filter the letters of the word, four of them result in the one thing, that is true, good and necessary: LOVE.
